Chapter 1
"OK, so I’ll see you tomorrow!" Kylie, My best friend said as she waved to me. Before I continue, I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Gledice Ng. I am a Chinese and have two younger brothers, Alenn who is 13 and Adam who is 12 now, in my family. My family used to be very happy and rich until my dad passed on. My dad passed away 5 years ago of diabetes, when I was 11 years old. Since then, my mum became both a part-time cleaner and a housewife at the same time. She was poor in her health and we had to move our home venue from a good venue to a poor venue. I went to a school where there were many rich pupils because my uncle helped my mum to pay for my brothers’s and my school fees. When I was new in my school and was very, very poor, most of the students always teased and made fun of me as they wore pleasant and clean straight uniforms while I wore only tattered and thorn uniforms. They looked down on me. I would be lonely without friends and when I reached homes everyday, I would be crying helplessly to myself in my small little room. My mum was very busy in her jobs and had no time to care for me. I did well in my studies and soon became the top student with academic scores in my class. Even in that situation, those rich pupils did not change their attitudes towards me. In fact, they grew jealous of me instead.
Chapter 2
One day, my teacher announced to my class," Today, I will be arranging new seats for you to change into." All at once, those rich classmates in my class began chatting away as they were afraid of being arranged to be seated beside me. I only stared out of the window which was beside me then and did not seem to care at all. My teacher asked Kylie to sit beside me. She was not part of the gang that looked down on me in my class. I glanced at her and she smiled at me. I smiled nervously in return. "Hi, I am Kylie. What is your name?" Kylie said.
"I...I am Gledice Ng. You can...call me Gledice."I replied.
"Gledice, I am pleased to meet you. Your name is very special.” Kylie said.
"Thank you! Your pleasure is mine. I think your name is very nice too!” I said.
"Thank you.” Kylie replied, blushing.
As the lesson got started, Kylie chatted with me and soon, we became best friends. I have came to know that Kylie has lost her mum since she was 8.We have been best of friends till today, and that was why I had said goodbye to her just now, to be glad that I will be meeting her again at school tomorrow. Through the years, Kylie has helped me to find many friends. A certain number of them were those who had looked down on me in the years before. I have started wearing pleasant clothes that was paid by Kylie ever since I had known her. I began walking home and was soon home. Also, ever since I had known Kylie, she had often invited my family to her birthday parties, where Kylie’s father grown attracted to my mum. They have been dating since then and I no longer had to feel poor. You should know what that means, shouldn’t you?
Chapter 3
Well, when I have reached home that very day, Alenn was shouting at Adam," Knock it off! I want to watch 'Detective Zero'!" They were snatching the television remote-control from each other. "You should be the one to knock it off! I need to watch 'Magic Life’!” Adam yelled at Alenn. I sighed. This has happened for more than ten times already! "You are gonna ruin the television if you are going to carry on with your childish fight!” I said and grabbed the remote-control from Adam's hands. As soon as they saw me, they gasped and stood up. "Hello, sis.” Both of them said at the same time. "No more shows for today.” I said and stalked off to my room with the remote-control in my hands. After changing into my home-clothes, I went to Mum's room. Pushing open the door, I saw mum in an elegant gown. My jaw dropped. "Mum, where are you going?” I demanded.
"Oh, love! I am going out on a date with Kylie's dad tonight. Can you help me to look after your two brothers tonight, please?” She said, making a pitiful face. "What? Again? But those two fellows are very irritating! I don't wanna look after them anymore! It would be torturing!” I exclaimed. "Oh, Sweetie, I know it would be hard on you but please, do it for mum's sake, won't you? Please? I promise this is the last time, I promise.” Mum pleaded.
"Like real...That was what you said the last time!” I replied. "Come on...Please? Kylie's dad has booked a table at the high-class restaurant and might be waiting for me now, already....Please?” Mum begged. "Oh, alright!" I said, giving in. "Thank you, honey! I will be back as soon as I can!” Mum said and gave me a kiss on my forehead before leaving the room. I sighed.
Chapter 4
As mum left the house, I went back to my room. Our house is a mansion now, thanks to Kylie's dad. I went to my laptop and began surfing the net. I came upon a website where it said that a company was hiring models. There would be a certain amount of salary that can be obtained from it as well. I grew interested in it and before i knew it, I was applying for it. The company sent a mail to me the next minute, informing me that I was hired. I was very delighted and was very cheerful to my brothers that night. I even forgot that they were not allowed to watch the television shows and led them to watch the shows! Because of my new job, I had to stop schooling. The next day, I started my new job. The chairman of the company was 18 years old and very good-looking. I found myself being attracted to him. But even though i was in love with him, I focused on my career and did not think about confessing to him. My photos were being put up in a magazine that was only reserved for jailers. I did not know that during that time until many years later. One night when i have reached home from work, Adam and Alenn came to me gasping and bouncing up and down,” Sis! Sis!” They panted. "What?" I replied, puzzled. “Sis!! Sis!!" They exclaimed. "What?!” I demanded. "Sis!!!!!" They exclaimed, even louder. "What is it exactly?!! "I yelled at them, irritated. "Mum…mum is getting married!" They panted. "Stop jumping," I said and they stopped jumping. I continued talking, "With whom, is mum going to get married?"
"With big sister Kylie's father!" They replied. I gasped. I ran to mum's room and forced open the door. "Mum! Is that true? About you getting married with Kylie's dad?” I asked. "Yes. Of course it is true." She smiled. I yelled in delight and went to my room. Kylie was going to be my sister!
Chapter 5
The next day, mum's and Kylie's dad's wedding was held at a grand restaurant. Kylie was equally as excited as I was. After the wedding ceremony, my brothers and i moved into Kylie's house, together with mum. I was allowed to share my room with Kylie. We were very happy! I told her about my job and she was very interested in it. I told her," You should apply for it too! It is very fun!" She sighed," But to have the job, I'll have to quit schooling..."
"I am sure dad will let you to have this job as soon as you have asked him. It is way much better than schooling!" I reassured her. She trusted my words and went to confront her dad about it while I read a magazine in my bed. After some time, she was back in my room with a sour face. "What did he say?" I asked eagerly. "He said..."Kylie began and her face broke into a smile as she said," That I can have this job!" We hugged each other and went online to the website. She applied for this job and the very next minute, she was hired! After that, we were told to sleep. But we could not sleep. I whispered to her in the darkness," Hey. Are you awake?" She whispered in return," Yes. Wanna talk?" "You bet!" I hissed playfully. I told her about the feelings I had for the chairman and also about me trying to win the chairman's heart but failed to do so. She reassured me that she would help me.
Chapter 6
The next day, I went to work with Kylie. She saw the chairman and told me," Now, go to the chairman and confess to him." I gulped before approaching the chairman. The chairman saw me approaching and turned to face me. "Is anything the matter?" He asked. "Well...not really...I just want to tell you...about my-my-my feelings..." I said. "Your feelings? What feelings?" The chairman grew puzzled as he spoke. "My feelings...to you..." I said and held my breath as the chairman stared at me for a minute before chuckling," Do you hate me?" I gasped and replied hastily," No! Of course...not."
"Then what other feelings would you have towards me?" The chairman replied, smiling. I blushed, "It is a typical feeling, really...It is just that...that...that i-i-i l-love...love...love you..." I gasped. The chairman stared at me. After taking a deep breath, he replied," Well, Gledice, the truth is...I have developed feelings for you ever since I saw you that very day...” My face turned red. The chairman grabbed me by my shoulder. "Would you like to be my girlfriend?" He questioned. I nodded nervously. The chairman hugged me. It was that very day when I started dating the chairman and it was also that day when the chairman starting dating me of my money.
Chapter 7
I discovered the chairman's name was Adam, the same name as my brother's. Adam was very sweet to me. A month later, Adam, the chairman, requested marriage for the both of us. I was a little worried that he was taking advantage of me then. But when I asked him why he was getting so impatient, he grew nervous and replied," Never mind! I will wait." 5 months later, he requested marriage again. I questioned him again and he reassured me that he will wait. One day when a year has passed since I have started dating Adam, I was walking towards his apartment. I had gotten his keys secretly and unlocked his apartment's door. When I have went in and locked the door, I could not see anybody. I went to Adam's room and pushed open the closed room and saw a shocking sight; Kylie was in bed with him. My jaw dropped and Kylie quickly got dressed. She came to me and began explaining," Look this- I can explain..." But I had broke down into tears and slapped her face. "You stole my man! You knew I liked him and why did you still steal him?! I can't believe why you stole him!" I yelled at her in tears. Adam was dressed and came to hug Kylie. "What's wrong, baby?" He said to Kylie. Kylie glared at me. Her face broke into a wicked grin. She snapped," Because I like Adam! He was mine in the first place!"
Chapter 8
I thought Kylie was my best friend. "Aren't you my friend?" I asked her.
"I was no longer your friend ever since you left me alone in that school to be with Adam." I gasped and replied," I did not leave you alone for Adam at all! I wanted to have more fun in my life! I did not know Adam was in the company! And if I have known you felt left out when I left you, I would have gone back to school! It was you that did not tell me!"
"Liar! You knew that I was not popular in school and you wanted to be popular so you went to be a model! You wanted me to be tortured!" Kylie snarled.
"I did not! I had always treated you as my best friend! Do you know how joyful I felt when I knew you were about to become my sister a year ago?!" I cried.
"Yes I know, because you wanted to replace me!" Kylie snapped.
"No! I wanted to be with you all the time!" I replied.
"Anyway, Adam is mine now. You had better go before I call the police." Kylie threatened.
"Why are you doing this to me?" I demanded.
"I learnt this from you." Kylie chuckled and both Adam and her laughed at her little joke. I left the apartment in grieve and tears.
Chapter 9
That night, when I tried to take my clothes from the closet that Kylie and I shared to take a shower, Kylie slapped my hands away from the closet handle! "Don't you dare to touch my things!" She hissed. "I need to take a shower! We shared this closet!" I protested.
"From now on, your clothes are my clothes and so this closet belongs to me. If you can't take a shower, too bad for you." She smiled. I tried to push her away from the closet and we ended up fighting. It was Dad who pulled us apart. "Now, what is happening here?" He questioned.
"Dad...Gledice said that from now on, my things will be her things! And the closet we had shared will be hers, only!" Kylie lied to dad. "Is that true?" Dad turned to face me with a stern face. Before I could respond, Kylie continued lying," Of course it is true! Don't bother to question her, dad! She will certainly lie and say that she did not say those words!" I gasped. Dad took a ruler and whipped my left arm as punishment. After that, he moved me to a rather smaller room and told me that my new room would be there.
Chapter 10
When dad told mum about this, Mum was furious and gave me a long scolding before sending me to my aunt's place to live. Before leaving, she shouted at me," You are not my daughter to behave like this manner!" I was told to live with my aunt then. My aunt treated me like I was her daughter. Her womb was damaged by her miscarriage many years ago and she could not produce babies. Adam, the chairman, fired me from my job. I was helpless and sad. I suffered from depression and was at the verge of ending my life. The day after Adam has fired me, I went to the rooftop of my aunt's condominium flat as we were living on the highest floor. I sat on the edge and cried. Many people who were below noticed me and soon, there was a large crowd staring up at me. Somebody called the police and very soon they arrived. A police officer who was 20 years old, two years older than me, came to the rooftop. I yelled at him," Get away or I will jump!" He jumped back in astonishment. "Calm down, calm down. What is wrong? Do you know that if you jumped and survived, you would be fined a million dollars for breaking the laws?" He joked. I managed to smile at his joke. "Now, now, don't jump and come back here... Shall I jump with you?" He said. And with that, he began approaching me. I screamed," No, Thank you!" And I stood up and ran to him. He led me back down to the void deck where a counselor appeared. She brought me to my flat and counseled me. I confessed to her about everything that has happened to me.
Chapter 11
After some time, our counseling sessions stopped. I cried over the counseling sessions and learned to forget about the unhappiness. When I was 25 years old, I had defeated depression completely and was looking strong and good again. I started dating the police officer who had managed to convince me not to commit suicide that many years ago, who is named Fred. We were married a few years later. When we went to Australia for our honeymoon, we bumped into mum. She recognized me but I did not want to acknowledge her. She smiled at me, hoping I would greet her. I just nodded in return and Fred and I continued on our trip, walking past mum. When we were in our hotel room, we were delighted and happy. We went shopping and watched many hilarious movies. I had never felt so happy before. After three days, when we were checking out of our rooms at the counter, Somebody tapped me on my shoulder from behind. I turned to see who it was.
Chapter 12
I gasped in shock. It was Mum, Dad, my two brothers and Adam with a young woman. Fred left us alone to talk. "How are you?" Dad asked me. I ignored his question. I turned to face Adam. "Chairman, who is this lady here?" I asked. "She is my wife." Adam replied. "What about Kylie, what happened to her?" I asked.
There was silence.
"Well...she is dead." Alenn replied. "Dead? What do you mean?" I demanded.
"She died in a road accident last year." Mum said.
"And on her death bed, she said she was sorry to you and wanted to see your face before she went...she told us what she had done all these years to you before she died and she said..."Adam began but stopped.
"What did she say?" I asked with tears welling up in my eyes.
"She said she had only meant to play a trick on you all these years and did not realise how heavy the consequences would be until you left...Her only wish when she was on her deathbed was..."Adam replied.
"Was what?" I demanded with tears flowing down my cheeks.
"Was to see your face for the last time and to be able to apologise to you." Adam replied.
"But we could not find you in time and she left." dad said and began crying.
I broke down and wept bitterly. I went to Kylie's grave and said to her," Kylie, I have forgiven you. You wish is granted now. You will always be my best friend."
Just then, I heard a distant voice. "Thank you. I will also remember you forever…see you in our next life." It said. At once, I knew it was Kylie. I looked around in tears but could not see a single soul. Please, Kylie, rest in peace.
